Tommy Ton – NYFW Fall 2014

NYFW is happening. Right now. And street style photographer, Tommy Ton, has already captured some of the hottest looks on the street.  Fashion-forward gals from far and wide flock to New York (before dashing off to London, and then Milan and Paris) to take in the future of fashion, and it seems many are already capturing key trends spotted on the runways for Fall 2014.

Fur, over-sized Aviator jackets, roll necks, simplicity, monochrome, layering and short chunky scarfs are all ‘in’ for fall.

NYFW is certainly a place to fan those Peacock feathers and show the world just how fashion-forward you are. For me, some of the looks are just about standing out, rather than being aesthetically pleasing – including these below. And, it would appear I’m not a huge fan of too much colour/fuss…

Each to their own of course, fashion is about personal opinion – else the style stage would be a very boring place.

Tommy Ton: Street Style Trends

So the Fashion Weeks are happening as we speak… NYFW has been and passed, as has LFW, now its on to Milan and Tommy Ton (Canadian street style photographer of Jak & Jil) has been busy snapping the fashion elite. Those who know their Wang from their Lang, and their Osman from their Erdem, flock to the shows each season, fanning out their fashion feathers, perfecting their statement stature like proud peacocks, hoping to get papped on the front row.

In true fashion week style, eyes are drawn to ‘runway to street’ styles of the public and attendees who showcase micro trends filtered from the fashion houses’ collections.

Three trends were extremely prevalent throughout Tommy’s snaps; all falling under the umbrella major trend: 90’s.

CHECKS, DENIM (Ripped & Patchwork) and unfortunately, BARING THE MIDRIFF.

Denim was seen in a more loose-fitting, boyfriend style, with rips at the knee and patchwork in places.

Invest in a pair of good quality ripped jeans (I think One teaspoon or Rag & Bone are both good options, or if you want something with more of a statement, take a look at the following)…

Junya Watanabe $777.93 at Farfetch

As well as this, checked, gingham and plaid shirts were also very popular.  Tied at the waist, worn clashing in different garment form or more subtly on accessories.

Work the 90’s grunge look with a plaid shirt, or smarten things up a little with check printed trousers.

Lastly, most prevalent was the ‘baring the midriff’ trend.  Now, this is only to be worn by those who like to frequent the gym. Muffin tops and belly wobbles take away from this latest style statement. Hence why I will not be fashioning this trend just yet.

Get Ahead, Get a Hat

Judging by the iPhone weather report, it appears that these April showers aren’t going away any time soon. This is quite depressing, but also, on a brighter note, it’s a reason to sport a trend, a trend which has become prevalent to me looking through Tommy Ton’s photographs.

The Canadian street style snapper behind cult blog, Jak & Jil, has been snapping his way through Paris, Milan, New York and London for some time, and I always try to mooch through his photographs to try to spot any arising trends.

Hats have been very popular throughout each major fashion city this year. All different kinds of hats. Bobble hats, baseball caps, Trilby hats and floppy hats. Take your pick.  One thing they all have in common is the ability to protect your lovely coiffed barnet from the terrible drizzly British weather.

What would you have worn to a SS12 Fashion Week?

Tommy Ton, the leading street style photographer behind street style blog Jak & Jil, regularly snaps the fashion crowd at the fashion weeks worldwide, from London to Paris and Milan to New York.  I took a look through his latest images on to see what the fashion pack opted to wear to stand out from the crowd and make a superb style statement.

They didn’t disappoint.  It seemed if you attended the SS12 shows, you were to dress loud and proud.  Colour and print were the name of the game.  This was no time for retiring wall flowers.  September was a time to stand tall and be noticed, for Tommy Ton was around and let’s face it, if you go to this much effort, you want to be snapped.

Here are my favourite examples below…

Details Maketh the Outfit

This season I shall mostly be investing in outfit detail to update old season wear, rather than buying into new looks.  There are several key pieces which I believe should be the basis of a SS11 wardrobe, which I shall talk around in a future blog post, however by looking at the detail and working this into key pieces, it will ensure you move smoothly into AW11 and be ahead of the game.

Photographer Tommy Ton, the mastermind behind fashion blog Jak and Jil, took some mighty fine photographs in various cities throughout the fashion week season.

Several details caught my eye; safety pins – great for adding to ripped jeans for that punk look, reflective sunglasses – preferably Wayfarers, armour jewellery adorning fingers, arms and even the head, not one top knot but two, knotted skinny belts – no need for the buckle, pile on the jewellery – mix your stones and your metal, and add a pair of sky high statement heels.

Another thing, which are just perfect for the transitional period between seasons, are socks.  You can wear those beautiful SS11 wedges/shoes you’ve already invested in without suffering from cold toes – just like these ladies below.

Tommy Ton Snaps – knotted belt, armour headwear, safety pins – lots of them, reflective sunnies, Topshop Unique Show hair, statement shoes, lots of jewellery

Tommy Ton Snaps the Prada Trend

Photoblogger Tommy Ton has been snapping the über stylish at Menswear Fashion Weeks in Florence, Milan and Paris. Photographing people with a knack for compiling the most fashionable of looks, as well as the utmost outlandish.

It seems the style pack have been out in their droves in some of Europe’s most fashionable cities, strutting down their own imaginary runways hoping to be snapped and shown to the world, in what appears to be the trends Prada have driven through in their SS11 campaign video (see previous post!)  I have spotted several likenesses in the many photos – some of which can be seen below…

Sporting colour popping brights in the most vibrant of shades, in Prada’s (soon-to-be signature) fur and platform pump pieces. The chunky lace-ups seem to have taken off, as well as the playful fur stoles…

Note – a must for summer:  vibrant fuchsia, tangy orange, electric blue, platform pumps, stripes, fur (if you can bare it in the tropical British heat).

It was also noted that Brogues (alongside these unusual pumps) are also be the footwear of choice, for both men and women, if street style is anything to go by.
